What is a Yeast Infection?

Yeast is a fungus called Candida and is present in areas of moisture, on your skin, in your gut, intestinal tract, mouth and vagina, or around the genitals, wherever there is a warm damp spot creating the perfect growing conditions for yeast/ fungus infections.

A healthy body will normally carry yeast and not be aware of it, this is true for men and women and children.

There are many types of yeast infection and we deal with them all, however the particular type of yeast infection I want to talk about today is Candida Albicans.

Candida Albicans yeast infection occurs when the normal yeast levels naturally occurring in a woman around or inside the vaginal area become overloaded or excessive.

What Causes Excessive Yeast.

Diet plays a big role in elevated yeast levels, our desire for sweet, sugary and over processed food is a big factor. Certain medications such as antibiotics and the lack of competition, such as the lack of the good bacteria acidophilus bifidus found in yoghurts, poor diet, low antioxidant levels, may cause a build up of Candida in the gut or around any moist area of your body, for women this is most commonly in the area of the vagina.

What Increases the Risk of contracting Vaginal Yeast Infection /Vaginitis

Taking an oral contraceptive, taking oral steroids, being pregnant, pre-period, being diabetic, sex – semen is alkaline and Candida thrives in alkaline conditions. Oral Contraceptives, Pregnancy, Oral Steroids and being Pre Period are all about hormonal balance, which regulates how much glycogen/sugar, is in the Vaginal Lining. Candida just loves sugar.

Other risk factors include the application of alkaline creams or using soap, most soap is also alkaline so choose one that is Ph balanced to slightly acidic. Our skin is naturally slightly acidic so using a balanced soap that is in the Ph range of 6.8 to 7.2 does not upset this natural balance. (Being slightly alkaline is good for our inner health; however our skin is a barrier to infection so it is important that it maintains its acidity to fight off invaders)

Other issues can include wearing synthetic clothing that makes you perspire, or that is too tight. Tight under-wear or nylon stockings that make you perspire in the vaginal region. Being tardy with the towel, not drying under and around moist areas like armpits and between toes, or legs is also a risk if you are receptive to Fungus, for everyone not just women trying to heal vaginitis.

How do I know if I have Vaginitis?

Your doctor will be the one to diagnose Vaginitis correctly, there are many women’s issues that appear the same or similar so a test is important to the diagnosis. Any vaginal discharge should be investigated by your physician, do not leave it, seeking a diagnosis for vaginitis, or Candida Albicans is vital to your health. There are many diseases that cause vaginal discharge and diagnosis is vital to target the correct treatment.

Bacterial Vaginitis is a thick, white, strong and nasty smelling discharge from your vagina. It is caused due to growth of a set of bacteria leading to pH imbalance in the vaginal area causing redness, swelling, pain, and an unmistakable burning sensation to the female genital area.
